NORTHERN REGION OF BANGLADESH
Northern region of Bangladesh is famous for archeological sights and historical relics. It is also famous for museums, mosques, temples and holiday spots. Delicious fruits also are available in this region. In summer time mangoes and litchis flourish the market. The people are very friendly and hospitable. This region is remarkable for Paharpur Buddhist Vihara, Mahastangar, Kantaji Temple, Chotto Sona Mosque, Uttara Gonabhaban, Ramsagar, Shopnopuri and many more beautiful things.
Location:
Northern part of Bangladesh, Rajshahi Division with an area of 34513 sq, km is bounded by West Bengal of India on the North, Khulna and Dhaka Division on the south. Assam and Meghalaya states of India and Dhaka division situates on the East and West Bengal of India on the west.
Main River:
Padma, Brahmaputra, Jamuna, Ghaghat, Punarbhaba, Mahananda, Tista, Korotoa, Dharala.
Rajshahi:
Rajshani is the divisional town of northern region. Rajshahi is famous for silk, mangoes, and litchis. Attractive silk products are available. A visit to Varendra Research Museum at the heart of the city would be most rewarding. Hazrat Shah Mokhdum’s shrine is a sacred place to visit. The bank of Padma is a popular place for passing leisure time for city dwellers.
Chhjota Sona Mosque:
Chotta Sona Mosque is situated at Chapainawabganj district. Sometimes it described as a “gem of Sultanate architecture”. It is situated near the roadside of Chapainawabganj land port.
Natore:
About 40 km from Rajshahi by roads in Natore, and old seat of Maharajas with a beautiful palace now serving as the Uttara Ganno Bhaban (President’s Official residence of the northern region). It was residence of the Dghpatiya Raj. It is situated amid well-kept grounds, surrounded by a fine moat. The buildings are modern. The include a well equipped guesthouse, an imposing gateway and a fine garden decorated with statues of white marble. Natore is also famous for ‘Kachagolla’ whick is a kind of sweetmeat.
Bogra:
Bogra is the nerve center of northern region. Bogra is famous for cards. There are some attractions like Azab Guha; Jamider Barrie of Mohammad Ali is in Bogra city.
Mahasthangarh:
Mahasthangarh or Mastangarh represents the earliest and the largest archeological site in Bangladesh; consist of the ruins of the ancient city of Pundrangar; The site is 13 km north of Borga town on Dhaka-Dinajpur highway. The ruins from an oblong plateau measuring 1500m N-S and 1400m E-W and are enclosed on their four sissies by rampart walls that rise to an average height of 6m from river level.
Paharpur:
Paharpur is a small village 5 km west of Jamalganj railway station in the Naogaon district where the remains of the most important and largest known monastery, south of the Himalayas has excavated. This 8th century A.D. archeological finds covers an area of 27 acres of land [apx].
Before the excavation this ancient monastery was covered with jungle and looked like a hill. So locally it is called Pahar or hill from which the name Paharpur is dscaver. According to the historical source this place was known as Sompur Bihara.
Rangpur:
Rangpur is the one of the oldest city of Bangladesh. Rangpur is famous for ‘Satrangy’ is a kind of handicraft made by local people. Rangpur is also famous for Karmaikel College and the oldest mosque in Bangladesh.
Dinajpur:
Dinajpur is one of the oldest districts of the country offers a number of attractions to the visitors. The Ramsagar Lake with rest house is a good picnic spot having facilities to fishing and rowing in a serene and quiet green countryside atmosphere. Rajbari of Dinajpur Tombs of Chehel Gazi, Gora shahid, Sitar Kutuari, Habra Seminary Barrie, Gour Gabindha, Dhingha Daraza palace is situated at Dinajpur is a nice place to stay. The marvelous place for the tourists is Swapnapuri (House of Dreams).
Kantaji Temple:
The most ornamented among the late medieval Hindu temples of Bangladesh is situated surface is beautifully embellished with exquisite terracotta plaques, representing flora and fauna, geometric motifs, mythological scenes and an astonishing array of contemporary social scenes and favorite past time.
Pabna:
Pabna is famous for handloom saris with the memories of Rabindranath Tagore.
Sirajgong:
Sirajgong is the gateway of northern region. Jamuna Bridge connected central and eastern region with northern region. This is the longest bridge in our country.
